Does anyone here give their child Ginkgo Biloba. Have you seen the studies done on our kids.
Check out www.changingmindsfoundation.com and see what you think. It looks promising.

I have been reading about a lot of people that do this- but have not. I don't think Dr. L. recommends it until they get older, but I do know that some of his patients are now on it as well. I haven't made my mind up yet about what I want to do with Carson, but you are right, it is interesting.

Isn't it a certain mixture of GB and Prozac?

yes they use Prozac too. But they start out just with GB first and they see a remarkable improvement just with that alone. Later they add the Prozac and omega 3 fats etc.

I don't know much about it, but the little that I know is fascinating and intriguing. I will look into it a little more when Oliver is older. It's something we'll strongly consider trying.

I am considering the GB - I am not considering prozac at this time.

I'm with you on that Kayla. I have a call into my pediatrician about giving it to my kids.
You have to make sure it won't interfere with any medications they are on or any condition they may have.

I'm note sure. I just started looking over their web site. I have forwarded the web site to my daughter who is an RN to have her check it out and give me her opinion. I would love to have my children put in the study. I watched some of the video of how the one doctor's son was before using anything and how well he functioned after starting ginkgo biloba and then they added some of the other things and he just got better and better. My son Sam is 12 years old and he currently functions as her son did at 7 years old. I would love to have him respond to me quicker and with more then a one word answer. I want my kids to be able to function well enough that they can live on their own with minimal oversite by me or my older children when I'm gone. It appears this may help them do just that.

Please let us know what you find out. I have heard of people that were very pleased with the use of prozac. I just can't get past the part that it has to change their personality- and I don't want to do that. I do love that the research is being done. DSRTF has identified something as well, but they are reworking the drug currently. I think we are going to see more options in the next few years. I don't mind donating for research at all- love what they are doing.

One of the ladies from my local DS online group gave me this web site info for changiing minds. She also states that she is looking into the use of coQ10, caffinie along with the Ginkgo Biloba. Plus she was looking into using Curcumin which is a spice and is found to have similar affect in the Neurogenisis to the brain similare to what was proven with Prozac.

So Maybe we could us the spice instead of Prozac.

We use Ginkgo Biloba with Osiyyah, but don't use Prozac or any other part of the Changing Minds Protocol.

We do however use Curcumin because it helps with neurogenesis (the reason Prozac is used in the CMF protocol), reducing inflammation, decreasing oxidative stress, etc. Most Curcumin products are not able to cross the blood brain barrier (where it is needed), but UCLA has helped to develop a Curcumin formula that does cross the bbb. We've been using this - Longvida Curcumin - since the beginning of May and have seen amazing changes in Osiyyah. There are no bad side effects to it either. I've been in contact with Sally Frautschy (prof of neurology at UCLA, helped develop Longvida) and she is very excited about the potential this has for kids with DS. If anyone wants more info, I'd be glad to post it up here, email it or whatever.

I have my sister asking a colleague their opinion on all of this. My sister's colleague runs a clinic for individuals with Down syndrome and dementia/Alzheimer's. I'll let ya all know what she has to say.

I went to GNC last night and I bought some Ginkgo Biloba Capsuls and liquid form. I tasted the liquid which is mixed with vanilla flavoring and cinnamon and it was horrible. It also would take almost 7 droppers full to get Sam's required amount. I don't think I could hide that taste so I tried to get him to take a capsul to swallow. I took one and showed him how I did it and put on in his mouth and gave hime some water and tried to have him swallow it, but it did not work. So I openned up the capsul and put it in his spaghetto's. The contents of the capsul smells really bad. I only did it with one capsul although, I would need to do this with 2 1/2 in order to get what he sould have with his weight. He is eating it really slowly. I let you know if he finishes it or if he refuses to ever eat spaghetto's again
He has left the table already so I'll have to check to see how much he actually ate.

I take that back, as he later went back into the kitchen and finished eating the spaghetto's. This means he got one capsul in him but still needs another 1 1/2. I think I'll start out with just one for while and then see if I can get him to swallow one later on.

He takes the Nature's Way Ginkgold. We crush the tablets up with a mortar & pestle and mix it in apple butter with his other vitamins (he takes Nutrivene-D).

What is the difference between Nutrivene-D, MSB, or a multivatamin?
