| The 2009 Buddy Cruise is scheduled for October 17-22, 2009. The ship will leave out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and will make stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Information can be found at: www.buddycruise.comBuddy Cruise Inc. is a not for profit organization serving families and friends of individuals with Down syndrome on a national level. It is our purpose to provide education and promote public awareness of Down syndrome by arranging and conducting special events, namely cruises. These events will be a forum for prominent educational speakers addressing a wide range of Down syndrome and disability related topics. We encourage self-advocate sessions. Buddy Cruise, ideally, will set sail each October, National Down syndrome awareness month, to honor those who are touched by Down syndrome. I had the priveledge of being apart of the first cruise last year. It was so much fun! I had the opportunity to meet children and adults with DS from all over the country. The workshops were great but the company was priceless. Imagine spending 5 days where everywhere you go and everywhere you look, you see at least one person with DS, usually more. That is what the Buddy Cruise was all about! Seeing children and adults with DS just living life, having a wonderful time and sharing about their lives. It was also great to get to talk to parents from different parts of the country and to listen to their experiences and stories. It was a wonderful experience and a time that I will always treasure. As a mom of young kids with DS, it's hard for me to imagie what the future is going to look like for my boys. So, it was especially wonderful to see all the young adults. The highlight for me was getting to listen to and talk to Emily Pearl Kingsley. She's going to be back on the 2009 cruise, and if nothing else, the cruise is worth getting to meet her and listen to her workshops! And, I got to meet Meredith (and her family) too which of course, was another highlight of my trip! | |
